FAQ
Open Graph images, social cards & SEO
The recommended Open Graph (og:image) dimension for Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter/X is 1200 × 630 pixels, which equals a 1.91:1 aspect ratio. The minimum required size for high-resolution displays is 600 × 315 pixels. Keeping your image file size under 1 MB ensures fast loading on mobile networks.
Common reasons include: (1) Missing or relative og:image URL instead of an absolute https:// URL, (2) The image URL returns an HTTP 404 or 403 error, (3) Social crawlers have cached an older version of your page, (4) The image exceeds 5 MB or uses an unsupported format (like WebP or SVG without PNG/JPEG fallback on older crawlers), or (5) Missing og:image:width and og:image:height tags prompting crawlers to ignore the image on initial fetch.
Each platform caches link previews. To force an immediate refresh: use Facebook Sharing Debugger (click "Scrape Again"), Twitter/X Card Validator (or tweet the link with a cache-busting query param like ?v=2), and LinkedIn Post Inspector. These tools force the platform crawlers to re-fetch your HTML immediately.
Open Graph (og:*) protocol was created by Facebook and is adopted by LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, Pinterest, and WhatsApp. Twitter/X supports its own proprietary twitter:* tags (like twitter:card="summary_large_image"). However, Twitter falls back to og:image and og:title if twitter:* tags are missing.
Some mobile apps and chat previews crop 1.91:1 images into a square 1:1 or circle in compact feed views. To prevent awkward cutoffs, keep critical text, logos, and focal points inside the center "safe zone" (central 630 × 630 px area).
The og:image:alt tag provides descriptive alternative text for visually impaired users using screen readers and is indexed by search engines and modern social scrapers (including X and Mastodon) for accessibility and image contextual relevance.
